At The Dance place we teach a wide variety of dances in several styles.

Here are the basic steps of the Cha-Cha.

 

The Basic Cha-Cha

 

Cha Cha Closed Basic

The couple is in "closed" dance position, lady facing the man

Man's Steps

Start with feet apart to side, weight on left foot

Step Where the feet go Count
1.

Place weight sideways onto RF

1

2.

Small step forward on LF

2

3.

Transfer weight back to RF

3

4.

Small step to side with LF

4

5.

Close RF to LF

&

6.

LF to side

1

7.

Small step backward on RF

2

8.

Transfer weight forward to LF

3

9.

Small step to side with RF

4

10.

Close the LF to the RF

&

1.

Step to side on RF and start over

1

 

Woman's Steps

Start with feet apart to side, weight on right foot

Step Where the feet go Count
1.

Place weight sideways onto LF

1

2.

Small step back on RF

2

3.

Transfer weight forward to LF

3

4.

Small step to side with RF

4

5.

Close LF to RF

&

6.

RF to side

1

7.

Small step forward on LF

2

8.

Transfer weight back to RF

3

9.

Small step to side with LF

4

10.

Close the RF to the LF

&

1.

Step to side on LF and start over

Abbreviations:  RF Right Foot; LF Left Foot


Each number in the first columns above represents a step/weight change; each number in the last columns above represents the count for each step.  The count given is the "beat value" (duration in time) for the step.  The "4" count is split into two half-beat counts and the two weight changes taken on those two steps are counted "4 &"
